About

Our visit to Japan

There are moments in life that change your direction - what is important - how you see the world.

Going to Japan did this for me.

In 2018 my husband Peter and I went on our first overseas trip. We are in our 60's, I was reluctant to fly and not that keen to travel. However, Japan had always fascinated us from afar.

This trip was an enriching experience on many levels. The people, their culture of respect and humility, the food, the gardens, my list goes on and on.

The idea of this blog began as a way of recording the many amazing and unexpected experiences we had. From visiting the Golden Pavilion to seeing the beauty in numerous rock walls wherever we went.

Much of our pre-trip research  found many organised tours which moved quickly from place to place, visiting many sites, but spending little time at each.  We quickly realised this was not for us. We wanted to visit sites that interested us, with the opportunity to spend as much time as we wished at each.

Our planning became rather fluid. For example, we had 6 days in Tokyo with a long list of possibilities. This meant we could then pick and choose what to do as the day unfolded (with all relevant details listed on our iPad.) We adopted this approach for our entire itinerary which necessitated lots of research and decided to share our research and experiences in this blog.

Our passion is horticulture so there is a focus on gardens and beautiful scenery and places. But we also look for those unique or creatively different features such as Japanese architecture.

We thought there must be other people looking for a more slow-paced trip. People with time and a desire to appreciate what is here in this wonderful country. Possibly many from our generation. Parents and grandparents. Nannas.

Japannanna was born.
