Insulated drink bottles

I use a Thermos insulated drink bottle every day because I prefer to drink water cold. It was high on my packing list because our trip was during Summer. It keeps the water cold for hours, even on very hot days.

We bought 2 additional insulated drinking bottles to use for coffee. Sometimes they were also used for iced green tea. They were Thermos brand, double walled, stainless steel and hold 470mls. With a jar of instant coffee and sachets of crema milk (always available and useful when there was no refrigerator) we had coffee with us every day.

Drinking instant coffee is not to everyone’s taste, but it had several advantages. (And you could decant a “real” coffee and still benefit)

Our coffee stayed hot all day – so hot that Peter bought a small cup because he wanted to cool his down.

I often had some for a quick pick-me-up during the morning after an early start. It was with us on the train or walking to our next destination. And because we bought food from a convenience store most mornings, it meant we could lunch with coffee in a garden or park, or beside a river. We liked the convenience of being able to stop where and when we were hungry at one of the many beautiful spots on our travels.

The bottles were leak proof and could be carried inside our backpacks or in the external water bottle pockets.

They saved us both time and money.

Flexi bottles

The other drink containers we took were Flexi bottles. These are light-weight BPA free bottles that hold 750ml and can be flattened when you are not using them, or also as they are emptied. They have a carabineer to attach to a backpack.

We froze water in them, and they kept our lunches cold. By afternoon the water would be melting and I could top up my cold water drink bottle.
